I was looking at both this style and the open-top style and decided on this one because of the closed hopper design and the grind selection lock.First off, the grinding mechanism feels smooth and heavy. I make a course grind for a small french press pot and the hopper holds more than enough beans for my use. It takes me ~30 seconds to grind beans for a single pot. The grinder is not silent by any means, but it is a much softer noise than any electric grinder I have used and obviously I control the noise by the speed of the grinding. The wooden grinder box looks and feels well made - not much more to say about it, it is serving its purpose as a frame for the grinder. The one thing I would possibly change about this grinder is either to add sticky feet or more weight to the grinder base. Grinding would remain a 2 handed job, but right now it takes a lot of downward... The instructions are not very informative; the drawings as to how to adjust the grind size not being clear. Bear in mind that adjusting The shaft upward decreases the grind size. I worry a bit at that at the finest practical setting (to use with a Chemex drip coffee maker) the burrs might wear one another out. At this tight setting, I suggest turning only when there are beans in it. Having used it a few times now with a regular bean and a dark decaf, as it doesn't make a very fine grind suitable for my Chemex, I use an extra scoop, i.e., 3 where I previously used 2. I use a small, conical scoop and brew 16 oz. to 500 ml at a time, so I was likely not using quite enough coffee for a given strength anyway.
