While the actual Thomas tables are nice, I couldn't justify paying that kind of money for only the frame ($150 minimum new if you're lucky) and then looking around for a playing surface when MDF is so cheap and easy to come by. I considered building my own based on the big train tables I had seen, but I do not currently have the tools/workspace to do so. So, I started out nixing all the high-end tables (i.e. overpriced) and looked for something tough and economical that would hold together for years of use/abuse by a small boy.There are some available x<$50, but the ones I saw assembled looked like a stiff breeze would knock them over. This could have been due to bad assembly by the stores displaying them, but when you go really cheap, you're asking for cheap materials, cheap hardware, and in general just more trouble than the small savings are worth.
